And we're off!

2025 has kicked off with strong momentum as the UK Government unveiled its AI Blueprint—a bold vision to strengthen the nation’s AI leadership through investment, regulation, and innovation.

It’s an exciting step forward. But as we know, ambition alone isn’t enough. AI success is about execution.

For PE-backed businesses, the challenge isn’t AI itself—it’s data readiness, integration, prioritisation, and leadership engagement. Without these foundations, AI can become an expensive experiment rather than a value driver.

What businesses must focus on now:

✅  Get your data house in order – AI is only as good as the data it runs on.

✅  Prioritise impact areas – AI delivers real value when focused on 2-3 high-impact use cases.

✅  Secure leadership buy-in – AI isn’t just a tech initiative; it’s a business transformation.

A thriving UK AI ecosystem needs both bold ambition and smart execution. The right steps today will define who truly delivers AI-driven value tomorrow.

In short, the UK government's AI blueprint focuses on several key areas to accelerate AI development and integration across the nation:

  1. Establishing AI Growth Zones: These zones aim to expedite planning approvals for data centres and enhance access to the energy grid, fostering rapid AI infrastructure development.

  2. Expanding Computing Capacity: The plan includes significant investments to increase the UK's supercomputing capabilities, supporting advanced AI research and applications.

  3. Enhancing Data Accessibility: By improving access to data from public institutions like the NHS, the blueprint seeks to encourage AI research and innovation.

  4. Investing in Talent and Skills: The strategy emphasises education and training for AI professionals, including the introduction of a new visa system to attract international talent.

  5. Promoting AI Integration in Public Services: The government plans to establish UK Sovereign AI to collaborate with the private sector, promoting AI integration across public services.

  6. Ensuring AI Safety and Regulation: The blueprint supports the AI Safety Institute and proposes a competitive copyright regime for AI training, addressing safety and regulatory concerns.

These initiatives aim to position the UK as a leading AI hub, balancing innovation with safety and regulation.

A founder's journey

“I love talking with founders! They always have an exciting view of the world, and their motivators fascinate me.” These were the opening comments from a fellow M&A service provider yesterday. And beyond them leading to an engaging conversation about data, private equity, and consulting, they also got me thinking.

From Data to Insights Monetisation

Intuitively, we all know that data is valuable. After all, our inboxes and news feeds are cluttered with headlines such as: ‘data is the new oil’. Plus, businesses demonstrating data-savvy behaviour have a ~200% greater market-to-book value than the market average, according to the International Data Corporation.
